What is Green Tea?

Green tea is a type of tea made from Camellia Sinensis leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, for centuries it was only consumed by the elite members of Chinese society because of its high quality and expensive price. Around the 14th century, Green tea became accessible to all and skyrocketed in popularity all throughout Asia. Green tea reached western civilization via the Dutch East India Company in the 17th century and quickly gained traction in Europe. The popularity of Green tea in the United States has increased drastically over the last several decades due to its great flavor and its various health benefits. [1]

Potential Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea contains polyphenols. Some studies suggest that diets rich in plant polyphenols offer protection against the development of certain cancers. [2], [3] These antioxidants have also been shown in studies to help fight a variety of diseases and promote overall health. Molecules known as free radicals are produced in the body and are harmful to cells. The antioxidants in green tea may help reduce the formation of these molecules. [4]

Other studies suggest that green tea may also increase fat burning by increasing the body’s metabolic rate. The data demonstrated that drinking 24 oz of Green tea daily may cause your body to burn an extra 70-100 calories per day due to antioxidants called catechins which are present in the tea. Aside from burning fat, green tea may even help lower cholesterol levels. [5]

Caffeine, which is also present in green tea, is a stimulant that has been shown in some studies to improve memory and reaction time. When combined with L-theanine, an amino acid, benefits may increase further. [6]
