Vitamin C

Vitamin C, as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient (needed but not produced by the body) and has a host of positive effects on the body, many of them are related to strengthening your immune system. It is necessary for the growth and repair of connective tissue (skin, bones, tendons, ligaments and blood vessels). Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant and can rid the body of harmful free radicals that can damage cells and even can cause neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Vitamin C is important to immune cell function, and a deficiency leads to lower immunity and higher susceptibility to diseases.1

Echinacea

Echinacea is a flowering Native American plant that has immune boosting capabilities. It contains antioxidants, but is best known for its immune system effects. Research shows that it can be effective at preventing the common cold as well as other infections by increasing white blood cell response.7

Spices

Turmeric's main ingredient, curcumin, is one of the most widely used natural anti-inflammatories. Curcurmin reduces chronic inflammation and helps take stress off the immune system, allowing it to focus on keeping you healthy. Curcumin has also been scientifically linked to having antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties.2 Its antioxidant properties are so strong that according to lab research on both humans and animals Mayo Clinic, “suggests curcumin may prevent cancer, slow the spread of cancer, make chemotherapy more effective and protect healthy cells from damage by radiation therapy.”3

Ginger also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits as well as some antimicrobial properties which can help treat infectious diseases. Similarly to turmeric, animal studies have shown that ginger may have strong antibacterial and antiviral potential.4

Cayenne Peppers are also well known for their immune boosting effects. The active ingredient, capsaicin is responsible for the spiciness as well as anti-inflammatory capabilities and the pepper also has 7 antioxidants including Vitamin C and beta carotene.6 The spicy pepper can also help minimize cold symptoms like congestion. A member of the chili pepper family, cayenne pepper is thermogenic, meaning it helps speed up your metabolism and is also a natural pain reliever.
