GABA

What is Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA)?

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) is an amino acid that occurs naturally. Around 50 years ago, GABA came to the attention of scientists as an important amino acid for the brain’s chemistry. It was not until around 16 years ago that the discovery of GABA as a pivotal neurotransmitter was made. GABA is a prolific neurotransmitter that is located within the limbic system, the portion of the brain that is most closely tied to emotional memories and feelings. [1]

What are the Benefits of GABA?

Located within the spinal cord, Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid is scientifically known as a vital spinal and supra-spinal inhibitory transmitter. [2] Basically, it functions as a neurotransmitter or a chemical messenger that limits signals sent from your brain to your nervous system. In this sense, GABA is commonly used as a sleep agent, due to its ability to inhibit the transmission of many unwanted messages from your brain to your CNS. [3] The blockage of neurotransmission can create general relaxation, help you fall asleep, and even reduce anxiety. [4] For these reasons, GABA is typically an ingredient used in drugs which treat anxiety, insomnia, mood disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression, and even people who suffer from seizures. Commonly paired with chamomile, GABA is seen as a sleep aid in many mainstream supplements. [5], [6]
