Chamomile

What is Chamomile?

Native to Africa, Asia, and Europe, chamomile is a plant that belongs to the family of the daisy. It is the general consensus that chamomile’s flowering plant was cultivated in the Neolithic period between 9000 and 7000 BC. It has been used for thousands of years because of its various health benefits. The ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman empires have all been documented to have used chamomile during ancient times. For centuries, it has been used as a universal remedy, and is now used all over the world. [1]

What are the Benefits of Chamomile?

One of chamomile’s most established health benefits is that it is used to treat insomnia and sleeping troubles. It does this by having a sedative effect on the body, relaxing muscles and in turn alleviating any pent up stress stored in the body. [2] In addition, chamomile oil is used in many cases to mitigate nervousness and relieve stress. While chamomile is an effective sedative because of its ability to relax the body, studies have also shown its calming impacts on the brain. While many sedatives have a sharp, immediate impact on how quickly you become tired, chamomile is described as having a gentle effect towards guiding you towards a relaxing sleep. A study published by the Journal of Advanced Nursing explains that pregnant women who drank chamomile tea daily for two weeks experienced better sleep during that period of time than those who did not. [3] In addition to improving sleep quality and relieving anxiety, chamomile has many other benefits including, potentially reducing inflammation, lowering blood sugar, and can even relieve menstrual pain as well. Children are often given a chamomile bath if they contract chickenpox, develop a rash of some kind, or if they suffer from bug bites or stings. [4]
