What is Beta-Alanine and what does it do?

Beta-alanine is a non essential amino acid produced naturally in the body. [1] It works with L-histidine, another amino acid which is ingested through one’s diet, to produce carnosine, a compound that plays a crucial role in preventing muscle fatigue and enhancing overall athletic performance. [2] Your body typically has high levels of L-histidine and relatively low levels of beta-alanine, which severely limits carnosine production. Carnosine blocks acid buildup in your muscles. Acid buildup is the primary reason for muscle fatigue. Supplementing beta-alanine into your diet has been shown to increase carnosine production by over 80%. [3]

When to Take Beta-Alanine?

Beta-alanine is a supplement which should be taken before workouts and is especially effective during high intensity workouts. Studies have shown that beta-alanine has the greatest impact on the human body during medium intervals of high-intensity training. For example, while beta-alanine will still be effective to take before heavy weight training, beta-alanine is ideal for intervals lasting between 1-4 minutes.
