What are the Problems with Artificial Sweeteners?

Artificial sweeteners are used as a substitute for naturally produced sugar or other natural sweetening agents. The idea behind artificial sweeteners is to create the sensation of sugar without all of the calories that come with it. However, to achieve this low-calorie alternative, there are often a lot of chemicals involved in making these sweeteners that end up in the final product. The ADA has cautiously approved artificial sweeteners as a good alternative to sugar to “combat obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, all risk factors for heart disease.” This seems like an obvious win and a natural choice for consumers. However, it is essential to understand the possible consequences of these artificial products. Dr. Ludwig of Harvard voices his concerns about the use of these artificial products due to their potency. A tiny dose of these sweeteners can have the sugar effect of significantly more sugar. This can be problematic as it leaves people desiring more and more of this sweet flavor, which leads to worse eating habits. It has also been found that consuming significant amounts of these artificial sweeteners can make eating unsweetened foods almost unbearable to your taste buds. This is alarming as the seemingly healthier artificial sweetener can actually lead to an unhealthy diet in the long run. [1]

Sucralose is the main component in Splenda and is 600 times sweeter than sugar. Sucralose is a chlorinated sucrose derivative that includes chlorine, one of the most toxic chemicals in the world. Sucralose was not originally meant to be consumed as it was designed for insecticide. This artificial sweetener can have significant long term effects on the body, including possibly leukemia, glucose, and insulin production, as well as others. [3]

Acesulfame K: (ACE, ACE K, Sunette, Sweet One, Sweet ‘N Safe)

These artificial sweeteners are ubiquitous in food and also coffee shops. These products are hidden all around us without us, even knowing. Acesulfame is, “Composed of a potassium salt that contains methylene chloride, Acesulfame K is routinely found in sugar-free chewing gum, alcoholic beverages, candies, and even sweetened yogurts.” Consistent exposure to methylene chloride can cause serious health problems later in life, including but not limited to: “nausea, mood problems, possibly some types of cancer, impaired liver and kidney function, problems with eyesight, and perhaps even autism.” This artificial sweetener is said to be a healthier alternative but has significant negative side effects. Saccharin: (Sweet ‘N Low)

Sweet ‘N Low is a top-rated product for coffee drinkers and other beverages that taste better with extra sweetener. Unfortunately, Sweet ‘N Low is made of saccharin, which is a very unhealthy artificial sweetener. In the 1970s, products containing saccharin were required to have a tag stating, “Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin, which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals.” This product can be very harmful to the human body and is found in many foods without peoples’ knowledge.
