Artificial Colors

What are the Problems with Artificial Colors?

Anything artificial is generally a red flag when consuming food or beverages. When it comes to artificial colors, there has not been enough testing to determine the long term dangers. Most tests are inconclusive but some have come back linking the artificial dyes to different forms of cancer. Certain colors when consumed by children have been found to lead to hyperactivity as well. The Center for Science in the Public Interest wants the FDA to ban 8 different dyes which they claim cause these issues in children. [1] “In fact, artificial food dye consumption has increased by 500% in the last 50 years, and children are the biggest consumers” There are also some color dyes that can cause allergic reactions. “In multiple studies, Yellow 5 — also known as tartrazine — has been shown to cause hives and asthma symptoms. Food dyes are likely not dangerous for most people, but avoiding processed foods that contain dyes can improve your overall health.” [2]
